Matheus Nunes

Chelsea have added Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes to their list of transfer targets, and could now battle Liverpool for his signature.

Liverpool have made Nunes one of their top targets for the summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his side’s midfield, but any potential move for the Portuguese star could now be hijacked by the Blues.

Chelsea are no strangers to jumping ahead of their Premier League rivals in the transfer market at the last minute, having managed to pip Arsenal to the signing of Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk earlier this month.

A similar situation could now play out in their pursuit of Nunes, who Liverpool are keen on signing alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham at the end of the season.

Wolves paid a club-record £38m transfer fee for Nunes back in August, but the 24-year-old may not last a year at Molineux.

Despite Wolves’ struggles this season – Julen Lopetegui’s men are only above the relegation zone on goal difference – Nunes has been a standout performer in the middle of the park.

The 11-cap international has been a regular in the team’s starting line-up, and has done enough to catch the eye of some of the league’s biggest clubs.

Liverpool had the chance to sign Nunes last summer, but pulled out of the race for his signature, leaving Wolves to have a free run for him.

That now looks like a mistake from the Reds as they sit 10 points outside the top four having played half of their league matches.

They look set to try and rectify this error in the summer by attempting to bring Nunes to Anfield, but may face stiff competition from Chelsea, especially with the spending power of the London club under owner Todd Boehly.
