Caceres talked about several people. One of them was Ronaldinho and another was Barca star Leo Messi.
The ex player was direct when it came to talking about how to stop the Argentine:”When Leo gets close to you, what do you do? You don’t know, so just kick him, that’s the solution you have.”
“Luckily, I never faced Messi, but I would have found it difficult because of the things he does, you can’t believe them,” Caceres admitted.
The ex-defender who played for clubs like River Plate, Celta Vigo and Zaragoza, also talked about the eternal debate between Messi and Maradona. He did not give his opinion though; “It’s very difficult to choose between one or the other,” the times are different and the football is too.”
What he did reveal were a couple of memories involving Diego Maradona. One of them was regarding the 1994 World Cup in the USA. “We were arriving late for the game against Nigeria. The Nigeria players were waiting for us. Diego came in and said hello to all of their players. He shook their hands and called all of them by their name. He knew all of them. They couldn’t believe it. From that match I remember the times Maradona was kicked.
And to close, he talked about an incident which could have cost Caceres dearly: “In a training session in Ecuador, Alfio Basile told us that Diego was coming to train with us. Normally he wasn’t training with us so the coach said we were just going to play a match so that we could move a bit.”
They hit a cross field ball and I went to cut out the ball in the air. I took somebody out, I didn’t know who it was, but I bumped into him. He went down on the floor and was complaining. When I fell, I looked and saw it Diego Maradona. I couldn’t believe it. I asked him to please get up because otherwise I would have been thrown out of Buenos Aires. After that, I didn’t get close to him again,” he concluded.
