Suarez

Luis Suarez is set to start for Barcelona in Wednesday’s friendly against Girona in an unlikely turn of events at the Nou Camp.

The Uruguayan is on the verge of joining Juventus after being told he was not needed by new boss Ronald Koeman, who left him out of Barca’s first pre-season warm-up fixture.

However, Barca are not willing to let Suarez go until they get one of their own targets over the line – namely Memphis Depay or Lautaro Martinez.

Inter Milan have already made it clear they do not expect Martinez to leave this summer while Barca are yet to make a formal bid to Lyon for Depay.

According to  Marca  , Koeman has now opted to include Suarez in first-team action in the event that the striker stays at the club. Barca want to sell Suarez now as if the 33-year-old plays 60 per cent of their fixtures this season he would be entitled to another year on his contract.

Failure to land Depay’s signature could therefore lead to a difficult scenario for Koeman, who would likely need to call on Suarez’s services but be forced to do so on a limited basis.

Suarez is now open to the idea of remaining at Barcelona if his switch to Juventus falls through and now has a perfect opportunity to prove his worth to Koeman in the friendly fixture.

The deal involving Depay is said to be done on a personal level with the Dutchman having already agreed terms, but talks are ongoing between the clubs over a fee.

A formal bid still appears to be forthcoming though, as Lyon chief Juninho Pernambucano said: “We have not received anything for Memphis.

” Suarez is in a similar boat after accepting a £10m-per-year contract with Juventus but must wait to see whether his move to Turin is confirmed.
