If Atletico Madrid know one thing regarding the possible swap deal involving themselves and Barcelona over Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann, it is that they are in no hurry to finalise it.
It’s true that Los Rojiblancos would be delighted to bring Griezmann back from Barcelona, despite the fact that it could be difficult for the Frenchman to earn the fans’ trust again, but they are in no rush.
The Catalan giants are the team that are sweating over the signature of Lionel Messi and they are keen to get Griezmann off the wage bill in order to create wriggle room for the Argentine to renew.
In recent days there have been reports coming out of Barcelona that different players could be included in the deal.
The names that have emerged in different articles are footballers who would fit perfectly in Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona, such as Mario Hermoso and Renan Lodi.
Joao Felix’s name has also been uttered but Atletico do not want to swap the player, as they have no urgent need to go through with this deal.
Atletico, meanwhile, insist that the possibility of including Saul in the deal is solely about facilitating an exit that the player wants.
If an agreement is not reached, the LaLiga Santander champions would not let any of their younger members of their squad leave.
Saul is a footballer who has been key for Diego Simeone since the Argentine took charge, and that if he remained an Atletico player it would still be good news for Los Rojiblancos.
It does not seem that things will be solved soon as it is thought to be a rather complex deal; not only do the two clubs have to agree, but the players would also have to agree terms.
At the moment, calm is the word that in Los Rojiblancos’ offices. Barcelona have to make the first move, and it has to be the right one.
